Drive through almost any neighborhood in Spring and you will see tall pines towering over rooftops. They give great shade and character, but their height and shallow roots mean they need a little attention, especially before storm season.
Why pines need special attention
Pines grow tall quickly, and their weight sits high in the crown. In strong wind, that weight acts like a sail. Dead limbs high up are easy to miss from the ground but can fall without warning.
- Look for brown or thinning needles in the upper crown.
- Watch for pitch tubes or small holes in the bark, which can signal pine beetles.
- Check for a new lean or cracked soil around the base after heavy rain.
Trimming pines the right way
Pines should never be topped or stripped of most of their lower branches. The right approach is to remove dead and weak limbs, clear branches away from the roof, and leave a balanced, healthy crown.
When a pine near your home should come down
If a pine is dead, heavily infested, or leaning toward your house, removal is often the safest choice. Tall pines next to homes should be taken down in sections by a trained crew.
